SIRIUS Conference 2023 at EuropolOn 21-23 November 2023, the SIRIUS Project held its fifth Annual Conference. The hybrid event, focused on cross-border access to electronic evidence, was attended by over 900 participants, including representatives from law enforcement and judicial authorities from 38 countries, as well as 20 representatives of service providers. The event highlighted the crucial need for a collaborative effort to effectively implement forthcoming electronic evidence policies.

During the three-day event, the participants had the opportunity to participate in a variety of discussions ranging from the project’s latest achievements, emerging technologies, and the related challenges in obtaining electronic evidence. The legislative developments in this field taking place in the EU and worldwide formed an important part of the conversation from the perspective of policy makers, practitioners, and service providers alike.

The SIRIUS Annual Conference 2023 programme included:

  • Interactive panel discussions on novel legal instruments for obtaining electronic evidence across borders, including the Digital Services Act;

    Workshops for law enforcement covering topics such as DarkTech, unlocking digital wallets, and emerging technologies and related challenges;

  • Workshops for the judiciary covering topics such as potential challenges concerning the clash between authorities’ need for data vs. data protection requirements and the future of preserving data, upholding content policies, and respective privacy rights in the face of core international crimes; and
  • Service providers presenting their experiences and policies for law enforcement requests for data.
